This quilt features a simple quarter log cabin block.  Honestly, I did not measure.  I cut squares and strips and combined them so that the block would be larger than 6″ square – but I eyeballed it.  I wanted there to be a fair amount of variety in each block.

april-block-1

Once the blocks were made, I squared them to 6″ making sure that the inset square would be square, and the borders would be equal width.

I placed my squares on my design wall and sewed diagonal rows together, attaching white triangles.

Jenna-Arizona-4

When attaching your triangles, make sure the hypotenuse (long end of the triangle) is where you want it to be – I’ve made many mistakes here!

Let’s talk about these white triangles!  The side setting triangles are Half Square Triangles.   The corners are Quarter Square Triangles.

april-math-1

In my example, the Quarter Log Cabin blocks are cut to 6″, and are thus 5 1/2″ finished.   Use this formula for determining the size of your half square triangles:

From a (Finished Block Size + 7/8)” square, cut two triangles.

april-math-2

I snip the 1/4″ off so that my edges will line up pretty precisely with the Quarter Log Cabin blocks.

Use this formula for determining the size of your half square triangles:
From a (Finished Block Size + 1 and 1/4)” square, cut four triangles.

april-math-3

Once you assemble your rows and corner pieces, add a border as wide as desired.  I added a 3″ strip around all four sides.
